Much improved
I was able to successfully backup one of my gmail accounts completely (>8000 emails, >750MB) and restored a portion of them to another account. I spot checked one with attachments and they came along as well.
Good work!

Wow! This seems to be just the thing I was looking for. I am eager to download and test it out. :)
Would it be reasonable to
Would it be reasonable to provide a (very raw) way for browsing backupped emails? I think the only important information for a raw browsing could be date, subject and attahcment name. By an HTML doc it would be great I think.
Nice
Very usefull
What has backed up?
Hi
I recently used the latest version to back up an account dating back to 2005. The account overview stated there were 2,401 emails but at the end of the back up I noticed 5009 .eml files backed up. Does the tool restore deleted email?

I want to try
I come to know about this through local newpaper... I would like to try then i will tell other people whether it is useful or not..
Thanks to google who made this kind of tool..
limited back up
I am a real estate agent and want to have all my emails for one transaction (over 300) backed up into one single file along with the associated attachements. Does anyone know how to do this?
Folders 4 Gmail
A lot of gmail users have folders 4 gmail installed. This gives hierarchical folders instead of just labels. It works using the / character as a level seperator.
I use this and would have to change dozens (if not hundreds) of labels to use your program.
I therefore really think you should offer support for the / character and maybe change it to a - for local use so as not to mess with file systems.
Fantastic work! Thank you.

Very very good for Beta
I really hope GOOGLE buys your company and pays you million$. I was an early adopter of gmail as a consolidation and spam filtering technique. I have 25K+ emails in archive, but lived in fear that all mails could be lost if something happened to Google, or the my digiworld. So now you have produced a simple basic tool with that killer function. Thank you. This stuff is still beta? Nice incremental feature. robust enough to restart if I go up on Proxy/VPN. Dont need a proxy handling feature, just let the program restart after the proxy is disabled. Or restart it when the Internet is up again.

gmail-backup-0107-Tool
sine I manage about 95% of all my correspondence, fax and what so ever else via pc I have to make annually backups of my gmail acct keeping it for the following at least 5 yrs.
It would be very bothersome to save each an every mail as a single item, since - dependign on the mail accout - mails run up to >2000 and above per year.
Now with the gmail-backup-0107-Tool it's easy to do things. That tools is mandatory for every gmail user, that doesn't want to lose any of his mails at any times.
The only problem: most of the time people don't know how to backup gmail and the information on the subject ist quite hard to come by.
Maybe gmail-backup-0107-Tool could been provided automatically to the new users opening an account with Google, i.e. been given the chance of downloading it right from the start.
This would've been very helpful to every body, deciding to use Google as his webmail client.
Other web mail accts have such features integrated with their webmailer so one could dl single mails to the pc on the spot without endlessly hunting for a possibly tool.
Chat backup
How do I in addition to my e-mails also back up the chats? Gmail backup currently does not back up chats.
Thanks

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04
To get it working in Lucid, you will first have to install python2.5, like this:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fkrull/deadsnakes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python2.5
It doesn't create sub-directories
It doesn't create sub-directories when I input:
c:\gmail-backup\#$YEAR\$MONTH\$YEAR$MONTH$DAY-$FROM-$SUBJ
it should be:
c:\gmail-backup\2010\05\20100512-xxx@xxx.com-subject.eml
but what I got is:
c:\gmail-backup\2010_05_20100512-xxx@xxx.com-subject.eml
I use windows 7.

Unread status
Just completed my first backup with this - 55000 emails successfully downloaded.
However, I have noticed that a number of emails that were marked as 'Unread' have now switched to being marked as 'Read'.
Is there an option to preserve the unread status of emails, whilst they are being downloaded?
Thanks.
Very helpful!
On this site I can't find
a straightforward noob description of how to proceed right after downloading this on (Ubuntu) Linux.
Do I run gmail-backup.sh or gmail-backup-gui.sh, or do something with one of the other files?
On the .sh ones when I select 'Run' then nothing happens, and if 'Run in Terminal' then a terminal appears and disappears almost instantly, and nothing happens.
I have just installed the wxPython packages and already have Python 2.6 on the compy.
[solved] ubuntu problem - downgrade to python2.5
on xubuntu linux 9.10
when you start gmail-backup-gui.sh in terminal you get the hint:
alx@alx-laptop:~$ bash /home/alx/Desktop/gmail-backup-0.107-linux/gmail-backup-gui.sh
/home/alx/Desktop/gmail-backup-0.107-linux/gmail-backup-gui.sh: Zeile 2: exec: python2.5: not found.
so we need to install python2.5 but since its not in the repositories we need to download these files:
security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/p/python2.5/python2.5-minimal_2.5.2-2ubuntu6.1_i386.deb
security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/p/python2.5/python2.5_2.5.2-2ubuntu6.1_i386.deb
and install them (double click) but install the "minimal" package first.
i have it working atm =)
cya/alex
thank you
the application is running now.

I'm running Mint 9 KDE and had also the problem with the installed Python 2.6. Using the Windows version with Wine did it for me.

Files' Names Length
Hello to the developer(s). Great work.. I just backed up 7 GB of emails just fine :)
The only problem was when some of the emails had subjects which were too long (Windows has a limit of 260 chars for any absolute path). Would you consider trunkating the file names if they are longer so that those emails don't fail to be backed up?
Thanks again!
Once downloaded into Ubuntu - how do I install it?
Hi
By all accounts this is a great program, so I am keen to use it. Firstly thanks to whoever developed it. Well done.
However I am no compiler expert or Python expert for that matter. If I extract the file into a folder in my home directory how do I then run the Python script. I have Python and wxPython installed, and have tried opening Python using the command line (after cd-ing to the location where I had extracted the program)
I would really appreciate some assistance here guys. Like everyone I would like to backup my Gmail.
I don't have Windows
Many thanks
Richard
Gmail Backup Comment
Dear Sir
I would like to get an update of gamail backup so I am looking for the software please provided for me
hi
Thanks a lot.
Thank you, one suggestion.
First of all thank you for a great tool.
I would like to suggest though that the tool not mark messages as read. I lost all my messages that I wanted to revisit, a lot in folders, now I have no idea what I needed to take a look at again.
Not working on Linux
I seem unable to run the Linux version on my Ubuntu machine.
I have the wxpython dependency but when I try to execute the program I get an error stating
"sh gmail-backup-gui.sh
RuntimeError: Bad magic number in .pyc file
"
Trying with 26GB
Hi, I am trying with 26GB of email from my gmail account. I hope it works well.
I will let you know the end results.
If it works! then you all peoples are safe as 26GB is huge number.
Thanks Guys!

compromised Gmail account....
Hi,
In following the directions after someone compromised my email, I saw these postings about backing up your Gmail emails.
HSN sent notifications a couple of days ago that their files had been hacked and the network's customer base emails had been compromised. Fortunately, they SAID the customers' financial info and mailing addresses had not been reached. But, in following up on Gmail's instructions on curing my breached/compromised email, I found by clicking "details" at the bottom of the page the following information about who'd been in my account:
Mobile Bulgaria (77.70.111.125) 2:26 pm (8 hours ago)
Mobile Pakistan (119.155.27.198) 2:25 pm (8 hours ago)
As you can see, two hackers, one in Bulgaria, and one in Pakistan had my email. They sent some email titled "be happy every day" to several of my contacts.
Anyway, I use Ubuntu. Is there a simple, step by step to use this backup. And, are you saying all 34,000 of my email conversations will be downloaded onto MY computer? Or, are they still somewhere "off site" but still accessible to me?
Thanks in advance for the answer...
Only for Gmail
Is this only for Gmail, or also for Hotmail ?
